In companies, there are different maturity levels of how UX is lived and applied. The Danish Design Ladder describes four stages:

1. No Design (Non-Design)

Design plays no conscious role. Products are developed purely functionally, without regard to user experience or market orientation.

2. Design as Styling

Design is used at the end of the development process to make products visually appealing. The basic function is in the foreground.

3. Design as Process

Design is integrated into the development process and used as a method to solve problems and systematically improve the user experience.

UX merges with the product, and the absence of problems in use is not recognized as quality, even if it is a significant achievement.


Lack of understanding at the decision-making level

At the C-level and in product management, there is often a lack of a solid understanding of the value of UX. The consequence: UX is treated as an executing discipline, not as strategic.


Reduction to aesthetics

The widespread assumption that UX means "making things pretty" or "arranging buttons" underestimates the methodological core of the discipline and limits its scope.
