Honic: a seamless user experience for the HealthTech platform

Splore supports Honic in developing their digital products that make health data usable for researchers: UX Prototyping, UI Design & Systems and UX Consulting in ongoing collaboration since 2023. The common foundation is the HUI (Honic UI System), a design system that grows with the product portfolio and forms the basis for a seamless user experience across all products.

Honic

Honic is a HealthTech startup with a clear mission: to make German medical care data accessible for research, digitally sovereign, with privacy and data security by design. The company operates an ecosystem of linkable care data for researchers and data providers.

Initial Situation

Making health data available on a platform and making it usable for researchers are two different tasks. Honic had solved the first: The platform with real-time health data existed, the vision was clear, the pace was high. For the second, user interfaces are needed that researchers can work with effectively, efficiently, and willingly. Initial explorations of individual workflows were available, but for a cohesive portfolio, an overarching definition is needed, from the design of a single control element to the entire product.

Our Approach

How do we create a consistent, intuitive user experience, efficient in development and regulatory compliant, and establish a process that enables quick and correct product decisions?

The question becomes more concrete: What does the UX of Honic look like, and how does a UI that fits the existing brand look? The brand design of Honic already existed. It was not yet reflected in the digital products. The goal was to create digital solutions that are recognizably Honic and make the brand with its values tangible in the user experience.

The Challenges

Designing a product for sensitive health data involves special requirements:

1. Different stakeholders with various perspectives on the same product
2. High demands on trust, accessibility, and usability with sensitive data
3. No overarching UX vision at the beginning
4. Time and budget pressure of an ambitious startup
5. Designing GDPR-compliant workflows for sensitive health data

Our Service

Since 2023, a Splore team has been working weekly with the Product Owner, with development being more or less involved depending on the project phase. Decisions are made together, with clear role division: The Product Owner formulates the requirement, UX proposes the solution and translates requirements, development provides feedback on feasibility. The result is solutions that meet the requirements and are technically viable. A framework shapes every decision: Honic works with sensitive health data provided in a GDPR-compliant manner. Splore designs workflows that ensure compliance with these requirements. The project falls within the field of UX / Digital Product Design. Three service areas interlock:

Development of operating concepts and workflows for Honic products. Tangible concepts are created in short cycles, serving as a basis for decision-making for the internal team, for development, and for investors. Honic has its own experts in-house, supplemented by feedback from customers. Continuous exchange ensures that the right problems are addressed with the right solutions. This concerns data visualization, structure, workflows, and information hierarchies.

More about UX Prototyping

Visual design of interface solutions and development of the HUI, the Honic UI System. It began with a visual outlook on how Honic can appear in the digital interface. After coordination, the Splore team set up the most important components. They were applied within the framework of a first product, continuously adapted, and expanded where new definitions were necessary. With each expansion, it is checked whether the overall picture remains coherent as a portfolio. The system includes components, layouts, design rules, and use cases. It forms the basis on which concepts, workflows, vision images, and UI designs are created as needed.

MORE ABOUT UI Design & Systems

Accompanying consulting for the continuous development of the Honic user experience. In weekly strategic exchanges, concepts, workflows, vision images, and UI designs are created as needed. UX also accompanies the implementation and reviews the implementation against the concepts. The consulting goes beyond the product level: Splore is active for Honic from the website to the RWD Summit, the Real World Data Summit, to product UX. Each design task is processed in the context of previous work, so decisions build on each other and do not start from scratch with each project. This holistic framework ensures that design decisions remain consistent across individual products and that the brand is recognizable at every digital touchpoint.

The Result

The collaboration has been ongoing weekly since 2023 and builds on each other. The HUI is the common foundation on which products for the entire portfolio are created. The goal of the work is to

  1. 1.

Efficiently bring digital products to market maturity

  2. 2.

Ensure a consistent user experience across all products

  3. 3.

Reduce complexity through clear prioritization and design rules

  4. 4.

Make trustworthiness in handling sensitive data tangible

Data needs products, products need UX. Together, they determine whether health data becomes truly usable for researchers. The Honic case shows what this connection looks like in practice. How Splore approaches this task beyond individual projects is detailed on the page UX for HealthTech.

FAQ

A Design System is a collection of components, design guidelines, and rules that ensure visual and functional consistency across all digital products. For startups, it is worthwhile as soon as more than one product is created or multiple designers and developers work on it, as it reduces coordination effort and ensures that every new feature fits into the overall picture. As the HUI at Honic shows, a Design System can grow with the portfolio instead of being fully defined in advance.

The decisive factor is the framework in which sensitive data is processed. The design starts with the workflows: They must ensure that requirements such as the GDPR are met without restricting usability. This is accompanied by high demands on trust, accessibility, and traceability. Splore designs these workflows together with the product team so that data protection is part of the user experience from the start.

In collaboration with Honic, the three roles meet weekly. The Product Owner formulates the requirement, UX proposes the solution and translates requirements, development provides feedback on feasibility. Decisions are made together. Depending on the phase, development is more or less involved. This results in solutions that are professionally sound and technically feasible.

Consulting that understands the special context of health data: sensitive data, regulatory requirements, different stakeholders, and the demand to provide researchers with a tool that is effective, efficient, and enjoyable to use. This requires specific solutions. Splore works as a boutique consulting firm in industries where generic UX approaches reach their limits. Further projects can be found in the Cases Overview.
