Jona Rammler, UX expert, consultant, and CEO of Splore
For more than ten years, Jona Rammler has been developing and designing innovative complex digital products for professional users in Medical Technology and industry. His focus is on systems where good usability is crucial for the quality of daily work. At Splore, he combines strategic consulting and design, from the UX Product Vision to the finished interface. The people who work with these systems are at the center. He develops solutions that make complex requirements understandable, improve workflows, and create added value in everyday life.
The Path
Jona Rammler initially studied Industrial Design at the Muthesius University of Fine Arts in Kiel and then completed a master's degree in Industrial and Interface Design with a focus on Medical Design. During his studies, he worked on a project about robotics use cases at the German Aerospace Center (DLR) at the Institute of Robotics in Munich, which early on directed his attention to technical systems for people in demanding work contexts such as medicine.
In 2013, an internship at Essential Design (Part of PA Consulting) in Boston introduced him to the world of consumer electronics. The experience in an American-influenced innovation environment opened up a new perspective on the development of innovative products and how strongly culture, attitude, and working methods shape the design process.
Against this background, the switch from Industrial Design to UX Design had two reasons for him: the way solutions are created in the UX design process and the consistent focus on the human in interaction. Starting in 2014, his path led first to medical device design at Garthoff Rhein, and a year later to HID in Hamburg. There, he was fascinated by the enormous impact of UX/UI design on products and the challenge of making complex products understandable and easy to use. From lead designer, he developed into design director.
In 2019, he moved to Deloitte Consulting in the field of innovation to deepen the strategic side of design: design not as execution, but as a strategy to understand complex problems, drive innovation, and develop novel solutions. In 2021, he became self-employed, and in 2022, he founded Splore.
His path never simply led from one position to the next, but always to where the next question lay: How are innovative products created that differentiate themselves? How are complex systems made usable for people? And how can design contribute not only to improving existing things but also to creating new ones?
Focus
Complex systems for professional users are Jona Rammler's common thread. They combine technical and technological complexity with an immediate impact: the quality of a system partly determines how people can perform their work in everyday life.
Across different industries, he is interested in how people work, what supports them, and how better solutions arise from this. At the same time, new technologies, regulatory requirements, and societal developments change the conditions under which these systems are created and used. He is concerned with how these changes can be translated into new perspectives and innovative solutions.
At Splore, he combines this perspective with two fields of action: UX Product Vision for the strategic development of target images and UX / Digital Product Design for concrete implementation in the development team, each as part of the team on the client side. The technical depth lies in three areas: Medical Technology, HMI Design and complex B2B software and HealthTech.
Design and AI
AI is widely used in the design process and increases efficiency: it provides capabilities that few had before, from presentation techniques to the rapid preparation of research results, and what used to take several steps can now be solved with a single prompt. For eighty percent of the solution, this is very helpful. For the result that makes the difference, however, the targeted manual approach by specialized designers remains crucial. Jona Rammler's term for this: Human-Crafted.
Awards
Four design awards were won during his time as Design Director at the Hamburg agency HID: the Red Dot Best of the Best 2018 and the iF Communication Design Award 2018 for the Krones Connected HMI, the German Design Award 2019 also for it, and the Red Dot Brand & Communication Award 2019 for the Sartorius laboratory equipment ecosystem.
Customer Testimonials
»Jona Rammler manages to convey the core of a brand in a user experience and visual design. Through his ability to leave familiar paths and question the status quo, the result of his work influences the HMI design at Krones far beyond the project scope.«
Drive
Jona Rammler understands design as a tool to concretely shape the future and drive innovation. Design happens where something does not yet exist, creating the possibility to take new perspectives, make alternatives visible, and initiate change. What is available as a draft can be discussed, and the specialist department, development, and management no longer discuss an idea, but something visible.
His drive is to use this opportunity for solutions that sustainably improve people and their work. Especially in medicine, this becomes a concrete responsibility: when UX Design helps advance complex health issues, enable better decisions, or facilitate medical work, the creative challenge is combined with an immediate societal benefit.
How this claim takes shape in concrete projects is shown by the cases.
